KAS, Update 2 - what you can do next

By Friday evening, at least 150 of you participated in this effort! Thank you so much, you guys are awesome. We've updated the archive of sample emails . Well, unsurprisingly, we haven't heard anything about Liz Cheney doing the right thing and apologizing for her group's statements, but that doesn't mean you should give up. Click here to see what you can do next. While we're at it, NIN got a mention on last night's Colbert Report; after taking a cheap shot, Stephen interviewed Roseanne Cash and lent his name to the cause:

Keep up the good work, everybody!

Keep America Safe update

Hey folks. Keep the emails going -- 111 so far (in 24 hours)! Great work, and we'll post some of the best emails later tonight. We just wanted to clear up some evident confusion, though. Please be sure to read the Washington Times article and our posts below carefully -- the offensive comments were made by Keep America Safe's director, Ms. Burlingame, and not Liz Cheney herself. We feel the apology should come from Ms. Cheney, however, as the group's founder.

We Demand an Apology from Ms. Cheney

If you've been following the latest news about the protest by Trent and other musicians of the use of their music at Guantanamo Bay, you'll know that on Friday, Debra Burlingame, a director for Liz Cheney's right-wing group "Keep America Safe," reportedly made the outrageous comments that the musicians' protest is "pathetic," and "It's almost laughable to think that heavy metal bands like Nine Inch Nails and Rage Against the Machine have a moral authority on national security issues." Thinking this over, we at the NIN Hotline have decided this is an insult that goes too far. It's perfectly fine and healthy for our national debate to disagree with the politics of the issue and to disagree with the President or the Democratic Party. But it's another thing entirely to attack Trent and other artists as having no moral authority -- in our minds, this implies a view that they are immoral -- and to claim that Trent and the others therefore have no right to complain about the unauthorized use of their music to torture people.

If you are as outraged by these comments as we are, then we encourage you to get in touch with "Keep America Safe" and demand a public apology by the group's founder, Liz Cheney, to Trent Reznor, Tom Morello, and all the other "immoral" musicians they've insulted. You can call "Keep America Safe" at (202) 525-4608 and (202) 365-3102. You can also email them at the following email addresses:

Please cc: if you choose to send an email, we can try to keep track of how many emails get sent.

As we are addressing a matter of respect, please be respectful - but no less direct - about what you think. In other words, don't be a jerk.

Also, if you happen to frequent websites or messageboards of the other bands involved -- including RATM/Tom Morello, Pearl Jam, REM -- please contact the powers that be at those sites to see if you can expand this effort beyond the NIN fanbase.

Let's stand together, NIN fans, regardless of your political stripe. This isn't about the politics of the issue -- it's about blatant disrespect, plain and simple. Let Liz Cheney and "Keep America Safe" know that their position is unacceptable and that they owe an apology to all the awesome musicians who have enriched American culture and deserve to have their rights respected, not dismissed.

Liz Cheney's Group Calls Reznor and Others' Complaints about Gitmo "Pathetic"

The political group "Keep America Safe," formed by former Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter and prominent birther, Liz Cheney, and right-wing pundit and Palin fanatic, Bill Kristol, has assaulted the efforts by Trent and other rock musicians to keep their music from being used for torture enhanced interrogation techniques as "pathetic" and "laughable". A "Keep America Safe" spokesperson went so far as to say "It's almost laughable to think that heavy metal bands like Nine Inch Nails and Rage Against the Machine have a moral authority on national security issues." I guess they don't think there's anything immoral in using someone else's creative talent and output in a way the artist finds reprehensible. If you're inclined to disagree with "Keep America Safe" on this issue and want to support Trent's efforts, check out the website and see how you can make a difference, including by making a contribution and spreading the word.

*edit*The Washington Times article mistakenly lists "March of the Pigs" as one of Tom Morello's songs. Thanks to those who wrote in to point that out.

This One Is On Us + The NIN Hotline proudly present...

Hotline Imagenine inch nails "the downward spiral : live"

As soon as I heard about the TDS set the band performed at Webster Hall last August, I immediately jumped on my computer and started collecting footage (especially since the show hadn't been filmed professionally).

With a little over 11 sources, this is likely to be the only DVD of that historic, first ever live performance of The Downward Spiral. You can download it as a DVD Torrent or a iPod-friendly MP4 on its dedicated feature page right here. You'll also find a general FAQ section as well as the full credits for the DVD.

Finally, the whole show will gradually be added to YouTube in HD 720p. Bookmark this playlist, it'll be updated as more tracks are uploaded :

Also, keep looking at for regular updates concerning the imminent release of Another Version Of The Truth, too...

Reznor and Other Musicians Formally Protest Gitmo Use of their Music

Trent Reznor and other prominent musicians, such as Tom Morello, Pearl Jam, and REM, have asserted a formal protest against the use of their music during "enhanced interrogation" sessions at the Guantanamo Bay detainee facility and have joined the "National Campaign to Close Guantanamo," according to this article. The group also announced plans to file a lawsuit to compel the declassification of documents concerning the use of their music. (It is certainly conceivable that blasting "Shiny, Happy People" for 72 hours straight might constitute torture, at least to some folks.)

Reznor re-records Zero-Sum for Fringe video

Shannon sent in news about a new promo for "Fringe," J.J. Abrams' show that's sort of like X-files meets The Outer Limits, with a quirky sense of humor. EW's Hollywood Insider reports:
After Fox’s marketing department showed the Fringe producers a version of the promo that used “Zero-Sum,” series exec producer Jeff Pinkner simply asked a nearby Reznor acquaintance - that’d be co-creator J.J. Abrams - if the NIN musician might be interested in a collaboration. One email later, Reznor was on the case. “We offered him compensation, and he said, ‘No, no, I just want to have fun and be part of something cool,’” says Pinkner, adding: “How often do you get the chance to work with somebody like that?”

If you haven't already been watching Fringe, you can catch up with the show via Hulu (if you're in the US, anyway) - that's where I've been watching it since it's debut last year, and it's cool to get an excuse to plug the show on my site.

Trent Reznor on new Puscifer release

These eagle-eyed hawks on ETS noticed something interesting about the new Puscifer release coming out on the 10th November:

5. Potions [Deliverance Mix] (m. keenan, t. reznor, m. mitchell)

vocals - maynard keenan
drums - tim alexander
bass - mat mitchell
programming - mat mitchell
banjo, mandolin, guitar - jonny polonsky

I think it's fairly safe to assume that this is Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. And just when you collectors thought you could start paying off your mortgages again...

We hijacked a truck with tour tshirts and put em online

NIN TshirtsThat's not really how it went, but sometimes I wonder what hoops Dan jumps through over at Goodrock to get this stuff in the first place, and then to be able to put it online for $12.99 a shirt? It's all officially licensed, that's the important bit. Anyway, we just got in a pile of tour stock - which means selection is limited, and when they're gone -- they're gone. Just like that 1,000,000 track jacket.

Good news for people who wear small shirts - a lot of the stock is size S.

Among the shirts we just got in, Corona Radiata (L and S), Demon Seed (S), Letting You (S), (S-XL), and one of my fav shirts, Ghosts Trees (S,XL). Shirts are all typically 12.99 USD, but there are one or two that are 11.99. We continue to bring the bargains on the good stuff!

We also have a very limited Ghosts junior zip hoodie in small for $26.99, and stocked up on all the 1" punk rock pins from The Slip and Year Zero, and a bunch of other things, but you can go check it all out yourself at our store here. Have a good weekend!

The Fragile: Deluxe Edition Tidbits

A few tidbits have been creeping in here and there regarding the 2010 reissue of The Fragile. Here are two of them -

The first comes from Rob Sheridan's Twitter page:
"Had a good meeting today about the @nineinchnails #TheFragile deluxe edition. It's going to be a hell of a project... (no, no details!)"
The second comes from tipster Isaac Grover, who was kind enough to send this in:
David Carson, the man who designed the album art for The Fragile, is currently in Laramie Wyoming teaching a semester long class at the University of Wyoming. When I told him about Trent's plans to re-issue The Fragile in 2010 he seemed very interested. He said that Rob Sheridan had recently added him on Facebook.
This is all of the info we have regarding the reissue thus far. We'll continue to make sure to add any pertinent updates as soon as we get them. As a reminder, follow us on Twitter for any current updates that we may post there before getting a chance to post them here on the main page.
