Coachella '09 = No NIN
Normally, we don't post news about festivals that NIN aren't playing, but the Ryan Seacrest "Seagate" saga (fake news about the final Coachella lineup including NIN) definitely got a few folks riled up. So, just so everyone here can see it, Nine Inch Nails is NOT playing Coachella this year. Some of the bands that toured with them last year (A Place To Bury Strangers, The Bug) are on the bill, and the Paul McCartney rumor was true, but yep, no NIN.

A little bit of self-promotion in hi-def ultra-realism!

I have been working on editing the Sacramento HD footage that is available via NIN.com. I've been adding them to my YouTube channel.
Since news is a little slow, I'll post a few of my edits here now and again.
I'll start with 1,000,000. It was my very first attempt at an edit. As a PC user, there was a lot of trial and error in converting/demuxing the file into something that wouldn't crash Adobe Premiere. I've finally figured out a method, but it is not completely free from error.

Charles Wesley Cooper III: 4/12/77 - 1/22/09
Charlie Cooper, best known for making up one half of Telefon Tel Aviv passed away on January 22, 2009. Josh Eustis made the announcement on the band's MySpace blog this morning -
Telefon Tel Aviv formed in New Orleans and has been making music for over a decade. They've released three full-length albums, an EP and have remixed many songs for various artists, including Nine Inch Nails (their work can be found on the Things Falling Apart EP and the Telefon Tel Aviv - Remixes Compiled album). We wish Charlie's family and friends the best as they endure this terrible tragedy.

We have been friends since high school, and began making records together a decade ago. We have been so fortunate to tour the world together, while at the same time having a massive amount of laughs at one another's expense.
Aside from Charlie's singular genius and musical gifts, I can tell you that he was a total sweetheart of a guy, and a loving friend and confidant to people everywhere. In the spirit of honorable mention, however, I should mention that he had a shoe collection that was marvelous, knowledge of hip-hop that was profound, and knowledge of wine that was subtle.

Alessandro Cortini Webcast, BOF Tour Starts Saturday
CESSA (Concordia Electroacoustic Student Studies Association) is hosting a series of six concerts in Montreal starting this Wednesday. Alessandro Cortini will be giving a lecture at 10:45 AM Thursday and will be performing at 7:30 PM local time on Friday. The lecture may or may not be shown on the website but the performance definitely will be. For more info, head here.

Another Version Of The Truth + What You've Become
Title voting has wrapped over at thisoneisonus.org, and after a week of voting, "Another Version Of The Truth" has been selected. Check out the announcement teaser here. Also, the project is now in its final phase for artwork submissions, so head on over here before voting starts on February 1st.

IEEE Spectrum has a very interesting article up, A Rock Show Gets the LED Out discussing LEDs and other cool flashy things relating to the previous NIN US tour. There's also a slideshow up.
Also, Nine Inch Nails has signed up to the Rock and Wrap It Up program which sends all leftover catering to local soup kitchens. Nice work!

News has been pretty slow lately with Trent and co. currently rehearsing and preparing for the new tour, but I think I've found a few things for everyone to dig around and explore.
Expanding on what I posted a few days ago about nin.com opening up the image & video sections for past tours, there's been some very cool activity taking place on the NIN Flickr page. Rob has uploaded over 100 images from the Performance: 2007 tour and to say that "they're very cool" is an understatement. A lot of these images haven't seen the light of day until now so head on over and check them out.
Also, the NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA wrapped up on Sunday where, along with many other musicians, Alessandro Cortini was in attendance. Tara Busch from AnalogSuicide.com had a chance to sit down with him and talk about the Buchla 200e along with his preference for analog synths. Check out both parts here & here.
Finally, and this goes without reminder, NIN starts touring this year on 2/17/09 in Australia and Blindoldfreak has a Canadian tour starting 1/31/09. Stay tuned for more tour dates because if this interview is any indication, we should be seeing some more soon...

We will gradually be filling those in with our archive of media, but they are open for anyone to contribute, so start adding your photos and videos. Use the drop-down menus at the top of the gallery page to select a specific tour and tour date. Remember that presently we only accept photos and videos created by you, so please don't upload old bootlegs or magazine scans that aren't yours.

Organization of fan-based Lights in the Sky video efforts continue
Complementing This One's On Us, a dedicated forum to the LITS video project has been opened at Echoing the Sound. Get in touch with other fans to get involved in a larger effort to organize all this video footage into something cool, or get sneak peeks at the video and audio as people with better bandwidth than you post what they have to YouTube and Vimeo.

Dave Gingras sent in a bit of info about the owner of Techdirt, Mike Masnick, giving a presentation about Trent's explorations into online music distribution at next week's MidemNet show in Cannes, France. The presentation is called "Serving Your Fans - The Trent Reznor Case Study" and you can check out some praise Masnick sent TR's way at this page. MidemNet takes place January 17th-18th. I'll try to see if I can find a transcript of the presentation and throw it into the archives once it's been given.

400 gigabytes of HD footage from the Lights in the Sky Tour as 3 torrents
That's over four hundred gigabytes of data, so if you've got one of those ISPs that has bandwidth caps, sucks to be you!
In all seriousness, if you're a casual fan, this kind of download is probably not for you. Three shows on the tour were filmed with four to seven HD cameras, and what's been launched today is all the resulting footage. The files that have been uploaded include Final Cut Pro sequences to get you started, if you're going to try and edit something together yourself. Or work together with others over at the fan-run effort over at ThisOneIsOnUs.org.
Wasn't that worth the wait? Mind you, don't take that as a sign that whining pays off.
Anyway, I'd love to blather on, but Rob states things quite nicely over on the nin.com forums, and I've got to get back to work.

Creative Commons licensed Ghosts I-IV is Amazon's #1 MP3 album in 2008
A number of people wrote in to point out that NIN's double-disc-length instrumental album, Ghosts I-IV, is at the very top of Amazon's best-sellers in their MP3 store (Digg this story, by the by) Over at CreativeCommons.org, Fred Benson makes note of the commercial success of an album that you can legally download for free. That's not even taking into account that under a traditional current-day record label, something like Ghosts would never, ever see the light of day.
Frederic Lardinois also covers this news at ReadWriteWeb, noting that In Rainbows came in just under the top 10. Even being #1 at Amazon's MP3 store, whatever numbers those are don't reflect sales through iTunes or directly through nin.com. It's cool to see innovation, but even better to see innovative moves that demonstrate real progress, particularly coming from people I've been following for years.
